What's New at Soft Treasures - Blank Gown-shaped Invites

Yes, after making those invites for my niece, I have decided to start making them to sell. For a pack of 12, you can buy them for $9.95. Gown-shaped cards are available in plain white, metallic white and yellow colours. Comes with a magnet at the back panel of the invite for easy display on the fridge.

Gown-shaped cards measure 13cms(H) x 7cms(W single panel or folded). If card is open it measures 14cms (widest area in the lower section of the card). All you have to do is embellish them, write down the details inside the card and off they go to your special girl's invited friends.

Creative Life Week 6 - Final Invites

After 3 weeks I finally finished my niece's final invite for her 21st birthday and completely embellished. The last item to do was find small pieces of magnets to put at the back section of the invite so it can be decorated on a fridge. Instead of buying them, I decided to recyle the magnetic calendars and/or business cards you usually get for free on postboxes which I had quite a few. I cut them into pieces and glued them onto the back.

Creative Life Week 5 - 2012 CD Calendars

I started making this project in early December and didnt have enough time to finish it. I could only make 2 months out of the 12 months of 2012 and decided to stop making it. My intention was to make them so I could sell them.

Two weeks ago I started to work on it again until I finally was able to complete the whole year but only for 1 set. Since I already had completed the templates, it was now easy to print additional sets.

So this week I again decided to make more CD calendars and in 2 sizes. I was able to print 6 sets for the large calendar (4.75 x 5.5) and 4 sets of the smaller size (3.50 x 3.75). Both sizes are in inches. The monthly images from January to December are pictures of Dress A Girl Around the World distribution of dresses to the less fortunate children around the world. I printed more so I could send them to my friends, show off my latest creation of a CD calendar.

Creative Life Week 4 - New Project - Kindle Cover

I am still doing the invites for my niece but once you have decided on the card design, finalized what information you need to print and decided on what pictures to include on the invite, the next few steps tend to become boring. There is not much challenge when you have done the printing and start cutting especially after you have done it about a dozen times. Making about 45 of them starts to become so routine that I decided to squeeze in a new project.

This time I thought I would make something for myself so I made a kindle cover for my kindle. It wasnt really difficult to make since I only wanted a simple one, as long as my kindle gets protected from the car and house keys, wallets, pen and other things I have inside my bag. The longest task to finish was looking for a spare velcro from among my piles of craft supplies so I can close the cover when am not using it. Just when you need one you cannot find it.

Being a fabric hoarder had an advantage again as there was no need to go and buy the fabric material. I have several metres of fabrics that are already padded and quilted so this saved me a lot of time but I would have wanted to use one with perhaps alphabets or books printed on it if I had one. I finally opted for the fabric with a 'travel' theme. Perhaps it will go well when am travelling with my kindle or taking the train to work with my kindle. :-)

First flowering yucca of 2012

I dont want to say I am very busy because I am enjoying what am doing but today coming home from work, I saw that the yucca tree I had in my frontyard had grew flowers again and I didnt even notice it.

This must be the third time it has grew flowers but the first time in 2012. I have neglected my front yard for quite a while now I think I need to hire a gardener.

I hope this flowering brings me good luck this year and in many years to come.

Creative Life Week 3 - First project – my niece 21st birthday in early March.

My first project is now underway and I reckon this project will take me about 4-5 weeks in the making or until the birthday party actually happens. Am not sure if I would be able to create new projects every week, if time would allow me to make small things in between within these 4-5 weeks timeframe but will see how it goes. I might be able to squeeze in a tag or 2 and be able to promote some of the supplies I sell. J

The tasks within this project would be (1) to create 45 invites with matching envelopes (2) create a small quilted wallhanging which will hold personal messages for my niece from her friends and family. These messages she will then open and read at her party. (3) make a special gift box for invited guests to drop their envelope presents. The idea of the box is so small presents are kept in one place only. Their might be a 4th task which is to create paper buntings to adorn her marquee. A marquee will be setup as the party is going to be held only at their place of residence. They have this big wide lawn which is good enough to accommodate her guests.

For the invites, I have come up with a gown-shaped card which opens up for the details of the event. The gown would be coloured white with a pink ribbon belt and a pink single rose to be adorned on the shoulder. Although her color theme is pink, she decided to have a white gown and instead use the color pink only as an embellishment of the gown.

The size of this invite is about 17cms in height and about 8cms wide (widest point of the lower section of the gown). The card below is a prototype of the invite.

The printing of the details of the event in the inside panel of the gown-shaped card is a bit tricky but can only figure out how to do the printing when the details of the event are finalized plus I might throw in a couple of pictures of the birthday celebrant.

So there you go. My first project of ‘my creative journey – week 3’.

The saga will continue.

Creative Life Week 2 - Decision Making

It is only week 2 of my creative life for the next 52 weeks and am already wondering what is going to keep me motivated to keep this project going. Haha! Anyway, I have decided to go for 2 projects for the next 52 weeks.

First project is something that I am going to do regardless of whether I was going to opt for a creative life for the next 52 weeks or not. Dress A Girl Australia is a charity work am doing very close to my heart. Last year I did a couple of daily sewing marathons running for 28 days each making pillowcase dresses for the less fortunate children around the world so I could have more dresses to distribute in addition to the donations I was receiving from the community. This year, my goal is to make sure I sew 2 items a week (a pillowcase dress for a girl and a pair of shorts for the boys) for the next 52 weeks. This will be in addition to any sewing marathons I would decide to hold anytime during the year. What this means is that for the year 2012, Dress A Girl Australia is assured of 52 pillowcase dresses and 52 pairs of shorts from Soft Treasures. The materials will be coming from the heaps of pillowcases and bundles of fabrics I have been receiving as donations to Dress A Girl Australia. This is my personal journey which I started April of last year and I hope to continue on for as long as I have pillowcases and fabrics to make into dresses. There will be other exciting activities that Dress A Girl Australia is planning to create in 2012 to make a difference in this world and make this world a better place so watch out for it.

My second project is what I would call my creative journey. Become creative or find and create projects for the next 52 weeks. As I have said I have never done this before but I am willing to take on the challenge and see what I am capable of and where my limits are up to. Although limited only by one’s imagination, I know the the possibilities of creating are endless.

What a very busy year I have ahead of me. This is really going to test my stress levels. Don’t forget that in addition to these journeys I do have a full-time job from Monday to Friday which I also enjoy and commitments to family and friends….but bring it on !

Creative Life Week 1 - Planning & Preparation through Art Prompts

What motivated me to challenge myself with this new year's resolution?

With the number of write-ups I have been reading from different craft and mixed media books and magazines endorsing a year of creativity as a new year’s resolution, this prompted me to participate on this year-long project. I used the term participate because there is possibly a lot of crafters and hobbyist all over the world doing their own version of this project on their own or in groups. I have been known to have great ideas to craft or to handmake among family and friends but they always stayed in my head, felt happy that I have thought and talk about it. This time I am willing to take the risk or the challenge of actually doing them.

For this very reason, this is the jar that is going to help me attain my goal for 2012. I am going to call it my Art Prompts jar. I printed the label from a writeup in a Cloth Paper Scissors magazine who is recommending a year of creativity as well.

On this jar will contain ideas of what to create in a particular day or week for a whole year. Where would these ideas come from? Everywhere. Every now and then, if I think of something good to create or see good ideas from craft books or magazines, I would write it on pieces of paper and drop on this jar. On days and/or weeks when my mind would go blank for ideas, I would pick one from this jar. Wouldnt that be great as a motivator?

Everything and anything I do will be posted on this site. This fabric journal would also help me throughout the year.

So I guess it is time to start my year of creativity. It is time to rock! :-)

A creative life in 2012

Last week I blogged about a new project which I will be undertaking and will be running throughout the year 2012. So here it is – I am intending to live a creative life for the next 52 weeks. A daily creativity would probably be pushing too much so I will just go for a weekly creation. Even with the weekly goal it would already be a real challenge considering the number of things I already do but I will try my very best to achieve it. I know what am capable of doing in my working life so this time I would like to see and experience what am capable of in the world of creation.

The first week has already passed but I needed last week to think of what I really wanted to do, check out all supplies I probably would need as I want to make use of what I’ve already got at home. Also I want to document everything I intend to create regardless of whether I finish a weekly project or not.

Last Christmas, my sister gave me a fabric-covered journal which I referred to as my ‘Dress A Girl’ journal. In this journal I intended to capture images of all the things I have made or done for dress a girl. I have decided that I will be using the same journal for my 52-week creative life this way I only maintain one log. Having too many logs to update will bring out the procrastinator in me. I wonder what the journal would look like at the end of the year. Hahaha! Knowing myself, 52 weeks is a long way to go to get inspired to do something or rather always inspired to do something but only in my head.

Happy New Year everyone!

Its been a while since I made my last posting. I have been very busy both at work and with my charity work Dress A Girl Australia. I know this is not a good excuse. I did a Christmas charity drive for Dress A Girl Australia for 500 dresses by Christmas and this took most of my spare time away from Soft Treasures especially on the last 3 months of 2011. Most of the handmade projects I started for Soft Treasures were left unfinished. Even my garden 'Idriess Place' has been forgotten.

But the good news is that I was surprisingly very successful in the Christmas Drive. As of Dec 25, 2011, I had on hand 337 dresses and am still receiving dresses and these were for parcels posted before Dec 25. The other good news is that am back to take care of Soft Treasures’ handmade needs. Although my customer service was still par excellence during the time that I was kept busy with Dress A Girl Australia, I wasn’t able to come up with new products. None of the items I had on my list were released for sale but they will be in 2012.

I have lots of good things in store for 2012 for Soft Treasures so come back often so you wont miss a thing. New products, new charity drives, new website (the current one I have is kind of rubbish when it comes to checkout) and a new group in Facebook called ‘Lets Do Craft’ for a new project I am intending to do which will last throughout the year and everyone is invited to join in. I will be talking about this new project of mine in my next blog so watch out for it.

Tshirt collection cyber-quilt

I have a lot of t-shirts collected from my travels, from watching concerts or just simply bought from shops. Some of them are a bit worn-out due to wear and tear but I never throw them away because I want to make a quilt out of them but just do not have the time.

With the cyber-quilt project I just started, I now have the opportunity to create a cyber quilt using these t-shirts. Am quilting in pixels. I took pictures of all the tshirts I have collected and made them into pixel blocks. Here is a section of the cyber-quilt which I took a picture of -

Quilt in Pixels

A quilt is made up of individual blocks which are then pieced together to make a quilt. These blocks are made of fabrics. A cyberquilt is similar to the traditional quilt except that the blocks or squares being connected or patched are graphic images or cliparts in pixels.

Today I am starting on a cyber-patch & quilt project. Each cyber-quilt will have a theme. Anyone who wants to be part of the project can contribute to the cyberquilt by providing a quilt block in the form of a .jpeg or .gif file and nominate a theme where you want your block file to be included. Block files have to be resizable. The blocks or squares you submit has to express or convey thoughts, feelings or information for the specific theme you have selected.

I receive a lot of brochures every week on craft supplies new and old and one of the brochures I received this week caught my attention. 100% recycled sew-all thread from Gutermann and made of 100% recycled polyester.

There are no flying fibres when sewing using this product, no thin and thick areas, no thread twisting, tear and abrasion resistant, elastic and flexible, soft and supple and non-fade and colourfast. It can be used for all fabrics and seams for all sewing machines and sewing by hand, for overlock and safety seams, for buttonholes and sewing on buttons. Can also be used for fine ornamental stitches and decorative seams. It is made in Germany.

There are lots and lots of advantages in using this 100% recycled thread and if you are into "being green" and "love the earth" then perhaps it would be a good idea to start using this environmentally friendly thread. To manufacture this item requires less energy and CO2 emissions are significantly reduced plus the fact that it uses existing production facilities means there is no need for new machines. Dresses for Dress A Girl Australia

I have never made a dress in my life and never imagined I will be making one. Then I joined the Dress A Girl Around the World campaign by Hope 4 Women International and that is when I literally started to sew a dress from scratch. With no patterns in hand but just a picture of a pillowcase dress. I even never imagined or thought that one can make a dress out of a pillowcase because making dresses was probably the farthest thing in my mind.

Since I started sewing about a month ago, I now have made a total of 12 dresses. It took me 4 hours to make my very first dress and not even using a pillowcase but from one of the fabrics I have collected over the years and now am getting better and quicker. Here are some of the dresses I have made for Dress A Girl Around the World project which in a couple of months will make it to little girls around the world who deserves to own at least one dress.

Imagine a world where every little girl owned at least one dress because every little girl deserves one. This is what the Dress A Girl Around the World campaign is and I hope you readers out there would join.

Soft Treasures' Studio

After browsing over a couple of magazines showing off the spaces where people work or their personal studios, I looked at the space where I worked and everything is so disorganized. I just dont have the time to make it look good and I feel comfortable working in my own space especially that I can easily find the things I want to use depending on what am currently working on. If everything is arranged and organized I may not be able to find what am looking for.

Besides I dont really have that much space. Just look at the mini quilts I have made they are hanged on the wall one on top of another. And I dont want to get rid of my papasan so I can feel more comfortable when watching TV which is on a wall in front of it which you cant see from the photo.
Maybe when I have the chance and the time, I will make my studio more professional looking. But in the meantime, am happy with it....am able to make more handmade treasures...and I even learned to make a dress for Dress A Girl Australia.

This is the 2" x 2" 'Green' quilt panel I created for the International Fiber Collaborative Dream Rocket project. I wanted to create buttons to celebrate 'Earth' Day and could not think of an image to use when I remembered my 'Green' quilt panel. Why not use the images on the panel and create individual buttons. Poor old Mexican Jar

This is my poor old mexican jar stationed in one of the corners near my kitchen area. I use the jar to hang or decorate the big tassles which I made about 4 years ago when I found some unused strings/ropes lying around in my kitchen cupboard. Dont know why I had them so I decided to make use of them. Made the tassles and until now still at a loss as to where to use them as I dont have curtains in the house. So for now it will have to be the old mexican jar that will have to be decorated with all the large tassles.

It is Earth Day on Friday April 22nd. Love our Earth. To celebrate Earth Day, I have come up with a limited collection of buttons promoting how to save the planet and make the earth a better place to live in.

About 2 weeks ago I posted a quilt panel which I created for the International Fiber Collaborative Dream Rocket project "Dare to Dream". In it were applique images on how to save our planet. Out of this quilt panel I was able to create my 10-Button Earth Day Collection.

5-Day Long Weekend

A 5-day long weekend is coming up next week which I hope to spend making more handmade treasures, design more buttons, create mini quilts to sell for the upcoming Mother's Day. It is about lost quilts which they are trying to recover by providing as much information as possible so they can be identified as stolen if ever someone sees it somewhere. The website also provides information on how to protect your valuable quilts.

Children from Around the World Paper Tole Project

This is one of the paper tole projects I worked on years ago(must have been 10 years ago) and one of my favourites thus hanging in my family room which also serves as my studio. Ever since I hanged it on the wall, because I dont use nails to hang my wallhangings instead I use 3M adhesives, it has dropped to the floor about 5 or 6 times already sometimes in the middle of the night. Today the adhesive gave way again and this time one of the borders inside the frame has been detached (blue item right in the middle of the image.) Well, at least the glass cover did not get broken.

My 15-year old Quilt

Was looking for something this morning and what I found was the very first quilt I ever made. Cant believe that this purely handmade quilt (including the quotes on each block) is 15 years old. I did not own a sewing machine at that time. Every handmade item I did was by hand. If I needed a sewing machine I usually borrow my Mom's. It was only in year 2000 that I finally decided to buy my first sewing machine.

Each block I embroidered the messages 'Be Happy', 'You Are Loved', 'Be Strong', 'Dream', 'God Bless', 'Imagine', 'Believe', 'You are Precious' and 'Be Yourself'. Too bad the picture is not so clear on those messages.

My Fabric Nativity Set

My Fabric Christmas Tree

my first christmas decoration in the house... is a 58cms x 86cms quilted fabric christmas tree hanging on my christmas wall with 24 fabric trimmings representing the 24 days of christmas , with a Eurostyle garland made of Christmas beads and jingle bells from the bottom of the tree to the top and today I bought a battery-operated green christmas tree lights to light up my fabric tree.

Global Challenge completed

Finally the 10,000 steps a day global corporate challenge is finished and I received my certificate today. Would anyone believe that I did 1,720,246 steps in 16 weeks and that is equivalent to walking 1,101 kms. Wow! And I lost 10 kilos. Now I have to make sure I do not regain the 10 kilos I worked hard for.

After the high school reunion I attended in Feb 2010, I went to LA California in Sept for a weekend mini reunion with 2 other high school friends who did not make it in the grand reunion. It was a real blast and so much fun that the days just went by so quickly. One Saturday I needed some green foams for a flower arrangement and went to a 2-dollar shop but I ended up buying a snowglobe instead. Went home to find a picture of the mini reunion I had with 3 high school friends and here is what I ended up with.

My Best Friend for the next 16 weeks

The company I worked for has joined the Global Corporate Challenge of 10,000 steps a day for the next 16 weeks and this pair of walking shoes will be my best friend for the duration of the program.

This program is a continuation of what our business group started at work. I hope to lose at least 10 kilos when this program gets completed by the middle of September. And all just by walking.

10,000 steps a day program at work is now on its fifth week and I think am starting to reap its benefits. I now have lost about 3 kilos just by walking at least 10,000 steps a day. The program will be going on for the next 2 months and am looking forward to knowing how many kilos I would shed just from walking.

How time flies! By the time i looked at my calendar it was a week before Easter. :( No more time to make anything to sell for Easter. Had too many things to do I completely forgot about Easter crafting. I was planning to do make some decoupaged eggs but too late now. There is always a next year and that is the good part.

High School Reunion

Who says reunions are not fun. The high school reunion I just attended actually triggered more reunions after that but in smaller groups. Reunions make you look back at who/what/how you were through the eyes and conversations with the people you are reuniting with, then you try to look at yourself now and try to think about what memories you have of your high school days that kind of influence your present environment and start to think whether these are the same factors you would like to carry on with you or perhaps influence your future, friendships to rekindle or you just move forward without bothering about your past friendships and memories that came with it. But overall it was full of fun and would have been better if i stayed longer as i was there only for 3 days(weekend) and time was very limited to be able to reconnect with everyone.

Another flowering yucca

When I came home from work last Friday, I saw another flowering yucca this time in my frontyard. Either the weather is really very hot these days causing my yuccas to bloom or am going to be lucky anytime soon.

I wish I could say the same thing for my other plants...the succulents. Even if they are surviving the hot weather, they still look very dry.

"Family Tree" Memory Quilt

A Memory Quilt in the form of a family tree - A legacy for future generations…a quilted family tree that can preserve memories of those who live in our hearts. An excellent gift to give to Mum or Grandma on their special days or for anyone on any occasion , showing generations of love. Something special to hold, hug or look at any time of the day, month or year.

An enlarged tree printed on 100% cotton fabric sheets with seven frames that can show quilt pieces and/or pictures of your family history. Approximate size of the quilted tree is 13.5” wide by 18” high and each picture frame is approximately 3” wide and 1.5” high. Binded by a 100% cotton brown fabric with running stitches all around the square about 2” wide to look like it has been framed. Total approximate size of the memory quilt is 18” x 22”. Picture frames, hill background and tree trunk has been handquilted. At the back is a quilt label where you can jot down the date, write to whom you are giving the quilt to and from whom .

Winning entry

Last Friday, I got an email at work that I won a ticket for 4 to the Sydney Taronga Zoo for submitting an entry in the Global Qantas Family Day competition. The competition was to write creatively in 25 words or less why I will have fun and enjoy a day in the zoo with my family.

In 25 words or less, I wrote "Me and my family will have fun and enjoy a day in the zoo as we will be spending the day getting re-acquainted with the animal environment". And for this winning entry, I won One (1) Family Pass for Two (2) Adults & Two (2) Children to the Taronga Zoo. The family pass is going to save me about 180 bucks and will also give me a chance to finally meet Luk Chai, the Australian-born elephant.

For sure I will have a great day. Will be bringing my camera so I could take pictures and share the experience I have with everyone at work.

Cyber-Friendship Quilt

In 2010, I will be embarking on a new project which I would call the cyber-friendship quilt. I am going to nominate several themes and will be inviting friends and families to contribute to the quilt they want to be a part of. Nominated themes could be about friendship, travel, hobbies, favourite food or if you are into nature your favourite landscape... all for fun! And what would really make it more impressive and memorable is if the images you submit are all your original works of art....your own ideas....your own friendship message and dedication....your own photos taken from your own camera. Each block that is contributed will have to be signed by the contributor.

National Craft Month

This month of March is National Craft Month. Am sure it is not only happening in the US but all around the world. For those crafters out there, help celebrate this month with new projects to craft...or if you have any unfinished projects take the time to finish any of them this month. For those who are new to crafting whether paper, fabric or mixed media perhaps now is the time to learn how to craft as a way of celebrating the event. As we all know crafting is a good way to relax, release all stresses in our daily lives. You will not know what benefits you can get out of learning how to craft until you actually do it....and believe me it really changes the way you think and your way of life.

My Garden - Idriess Place Chapter 7

It has been a long time since I last blogged about my garden. I have been too busy that I didnt seem to have the time to go and see my plants. Very hot summer days also was a factor in not being able to check them out not even my frontyard.

Last Saturday, while hanging my laundry out to dry, I finally noticed that unwanted creeping vines have really grown over the fence so much so that there was no longer a sunlight coming through in my area, not even a bit of sunlight as it was fully covered by the creeping vines. So I decided to do a little cleanup of my backyard and that is when I saw that 2 of my yucca plants have actually bloomed flowers and I never even knew about it.

Based on my estimate, the beautiful white flowers must have grown for about a month already as they seemed to look like they were about to start wilting. I wouldnt want to miss it for the world to see my yuccas blooming flowers. Without blinking an eye, I went inside the house, took my camera and started taking pictures of my backyard garden again most especially with my precious yuccas that bloomed flowers. The last time one of my yuccas in my frontyard bloomed a flower was in 2008.

My backyard still needs more care and clean-up though.
